This low cost, prefabricated cottage was
developed by Jonathan Crinion and Stephanie Mills for a site on
Christian Island, Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada. The cottage is
intended to be a prototype for a 'kit' house that can be prefabricated
off site. It is raised off the ground using sonar tube foundations
to leave ground vegetation undisturbed and to minimise the need
for excavation. The main Living-Dining-Kitchen area is open plan,
with three bedrooms and a bathroom to the rear. A wood burning stove
heats the entire space. Fabricated with a timber frame, plywood
and Cedar cladding / decking, the structure is made from sustainable
sources. The floating, curved roof has a long skylight along the
central circulation spine. The roof is made from standing seam zinc
and extends on its outer edges to incorporate brise-soleil for shading.
Electricty is generated by flexible, building integrated solar panels
inserted between the standing seam roof modules. A composting toilet
is used.
