Located at Insh near Kingussie in the
Scottish Highlands, this new timber framed house was designed for
an owner-builder. The client wanted an ecologically sound house.
The buildings were sited to retain a large grove of Birch trees
in the centre of the site and along the East boundary. The house
is L-shaped to optimise views to the North West. It is clad in untreated
European Larch with a Cedar shingle roof. The Scandinavian timber
framed windows are double glazed with low emissivity glass. The
ground floor has a large open plan Kitchen-Dining-Family space.
A utility area and bathroom separate this space from a Study / Guest
Room and Living Room. The house is heated by a large wood burning
stove. The staircase to the first floor is devised as a storage
wall, utilising the space underneath with access from the side.
The upper floor consists of five bedrooms and two bathrooms for
the family of six. The corridor frames magnificent views of the
mountains.
