Kevin
Miller (Gerard Rooney), a young Protestant journalist from Belfast,
is deeply affected by the death of his father (Seamus Ball). As
a result of arriving at work drunk, he is dispatched to The Chronicle,
a sister paper in the small, seedy town of Crossmaheart. Jamie Milburn,
his predecessor, has disappeared, presumed dead. Miller arrives
on his trusty mountain bike bringing his conscience with him in
the shape of his father's ghost. There
he discovers his new editor, O'Hagan (Enda Oates), is doing little
to find out what has happened to Jamie but Miller is told not to
become involved. Mistakenly going into a Republican pub, Miller
meets Marie (Maria Lennon), Jamie's girlfriend, a highly strung
Catholic girl. They hit it off right away. Marie is haunted by a
recurrent nightmare of a sexual assault in her youth. She believes
Jamie was killed because of a
story on which he was working. Miller decides to carry out his own
investigation. After talking to maverick cop, Craig (Des Cave),
Miller suspects Jamie's disappearance may be connected to Marie's
assault. The fifteen year old file on her case reveals the names
of three men found guilty. One by one Miller tracks them down and
confronts them. Craig hints there may have been a fourth rapist,
a juvenile, protected by law. Further investigation reveals this
to be his editor, O'Hagan who kills himself when confronted. Justice
done, Marie and Miller, in love, return to Belfast.
