Great Common Farm was a proposed new settlement
near Cambridge, UK. It was intended to relieve growth pressures
on the historic university town. The client was Stanhope Properties
and the Victoria University of Manchester. Arup Urban Design were
the masterplanners. A mix of uses, including 3000 new housing units
at varying densities, was proposed for the 300 acre site. Stephanie
Mills worked with Arup Urban Design Director, Michael Lowe, in drawing
up the Master Plan and Phasing Strategy. Stephanie Mills drew up
the housing guidelines. These were then tested by enagaging three
architectural practices - namely. Allies & Morrsion; MacCormac
Jamieson, Prichard; and Aldington, Craig & Collinge to each
design housing schemes at low, medium and high densities. The image
lower left is of the medium density scheme proposed by Allies &
Morrison. The project remains unbuilt.
